Badosa praises Tsitsipas: ‘He’s a champion & will always be a champion’

Paula Badosa will look to bring the best out of her partner Stefanos Tsitsipas when the pair joins forces in mixed doubles at the US Open this week.

Ahead of their opening match in New York, the WTA star gave a message of support to her boyfriend Tsitsipas, who suffered a first-round loss in singles against Thanasi Kokkinakis on Tuesday.

“We’re looking forward to it, it’s really nice to share the court together,” Badosa said after reaching the third round in the women’s singles Wednesday. “We spend time off court, but also on court. It’s really special in a Slam. It’s like a dream come true.

“Big shout out to him. He’s going through tough moments – but he’s a champion and he will always be a champion.”

Tsitsipas will hope to discover his form in the mixed doubles after a testing month, which saw him also split with coach and father Apostolos Tsitsipas following his early exit in Montreal.

Gabriela Dabrowski and Joe Salisbury are the top seeds in the mixed doubles, while Erin Routliffe and Michael Venus are seeded second. Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young team, with Matthew Ebden and Barbora Krejcikova set to compete together. World No. 11 Tsitsipas is the highest-ranked men’s singles player in the draw.
