Sinner's World No. 1 celebrations continue upon Halle arrival

Fresh off becoming World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time, Jannik Sinner has arrived at the Terra Wortmann Open in Germany, where the Italian will begin his grass-court season next week.

Making his second appearance at the ATP 500 in Halle, the top seed was greeted with a cake to celebrate his rise to the pinnacle of the sport. Sinner on Monday became the 29th player to become World No. 1 since computerised rankings began in 1973.

The 22-year-old next looks to add to his standout season by claiming his maiden grass-court crown. "Of course, I want to be in the fight for the title. But the competition is very, very strong,” said the 13-time tour-level titlist.

[ATP APP]

Already a champion at the Australian Open, in Rotterdam and Miami this year, Sinner enters Halle with a 33-3 season record. Should he claim his fourth trophy of 2024 in Halle, Sinner would become the first Italian champion in tournament history. He is aiming to become the first World No. 1 to win the grass ATP 500 since Roger Federer in 2008.

Sinner will learn his place in the Terra Wortmann Open draw on Saturday.

Kings of Queen's Club: How Murray & more reigned on the London grass

The Cinch Championships has crowned many legends of the game as champions throughout the storied history of the ATP 500 event. But a select few superstars rise above the rest in the London tournament's record book.

In 2016, Andy Murray became the first player to win five titles at The Queen's Club, breaking a tie with an elite group of players that also includes Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Boris Becker and John McEnroe. All five of those men, whose success at the London event is explored below, are former No. 1s in the PIF ATP Rankings.

[ATP APP]

Andy Murray (Singles titles: 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015-16)
Home favourite Murray became the first British man since Henry Austin in 1938 to win the Queen's Club singles title when he claimed his maiden trophy at the event in 2009.

"It's been a great week for me," Murray said after a 7-5, 6-4 final victory against James Blake. "This is some of the best tennis I've ever played in my life. I was quite nervous because people were telling me no Briton had won here for quite a while, but when I had my chances I managed to take them. The only thing left for me is to win a Grand Slam."

Murray would go on to win three Grand Slams, including two Wimbledons, but his title count at Queen's Club rose even higher. A perfect 5-0 in finals at the event, Murray thrice came back from a set down to win the trophy, fighting back against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2011), Marin Cilic (2013) and Milos Raonic (2016).

Top seed De Minaur starts strong in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, next faces Raonic

Headlining the field at an ATP Tour event appeared to suit Alex de Minaur on Thursday in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

The Australian held off Zizou Bergs for a 7-5, 6-4 opening victory at the Libema Open, where he is competing as the top seed for the first time in his tour-level career. Whatever extra pressure that may have brought, the No. 9 in the PIF ATP Rankings handled it with aplomb as he rallied from an early 1-4 deficit to notch a straight-sets win in one hour and 41 minutes.

“It feels great. Zizou is a hell of competitor and a very tricky opponent and I’m very happy I was able to sneak the win today,” said De Minaur in his on-court interview. “First win of the grass-court season, so hopefully there are many, many more.

“It’s my first match on the grass [this season]. I’ve been able to get a couple of [practice] sets here and there, but there is nothing like matches. it’s good to get the win under my belt and hopefully I can get some confidence from this.”

Berrettini breaks Shapovalov duck for Stuttgart QF spot; Shelton falls

Matteo Berrettini added another stylish win to his dominant record at the BOSS OPEN on Thursday afternoon.

The 2019 and 2022 champion at the grass-court ATP 250 defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4 with a rock-solid second-round display. It was Berrettini’s first victory in three Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings between the two players, and he is now 11-1 in Stuttgart.

“I knew that I hadn’t beaten him,” said Berrettini in his post-match interview. “[We played] two really tough matches, but they were a long time ago. I knew that I had to play my best tennis in order to beat him, and I did today.

“I know that so far in my career I’ve been pretty successful on grass. I think it’s my best surface, and I love to play especially here in Stuttgart. I’m really happy to be in the quarter-finals. Now I need to rest a little bit and wait until tomorrow to think about tomorrow.”

Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal announced on social media Thursday that he will not compete at Wimbledon.

The Spaniard explained that with this year’s Olympics being played on clay at Roland Garros, he does not want to change surface. He most recently played at Roland Garros.

“During my post match press conference at Roland Garros I was asked about my summer calendar and since then I have been practising on clay. It was announced yesterday that I will play at the summer Olympics in Paris, my last Olympics,” Nadal wrote. “With this goal, we believe that the best for my body is not to change surface and keep playing on clay until then.

"It’s for this reason that I will miss playing at The Championships this year at Wimbledon. I am saddened not to be able to live this year the great atmosphere of that amazing event that will always be in my heart, and be with all the British fans that always gave me great support. I will miss you all.”

Nadal and Alcaraz to join forces in Olympics doubles

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will form a doubles team at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The news was officially confirmed on Wednesday by David Ferrer, the captain of the Spanish men’s team, at an event held at the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona. The Spanish line-up in Paris will also include Pablo Carreno Busta, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Marcel Granollers.

“As you all know, one of the doubles teams will be formed by Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal,” Ferrer said of the two former No. 1s in the PIF ATP Rankings, who will also both compete in singles. “The second team is yet to be decided, it’s not 100 per cent certain. There is a clear idea, but we’re going to wait a little to decide it. If nothing happens to prevent it, Rafa and Carlos will be playing together in Paris.”

— ATP Tour (@atptour) June 12, 2024

Alcaraz will have to adjust to having a teammate by his side on court; his history in doubles is a short one. In his professional career, the Murcia native has only played nine matches in the team format, none of them coming in the past two seasons. While his meteoric rise to the top of men’s tennis came off the back of very little experience on the big stages, adapting to the team discipline will provide a new opportunity for the prodigy from El Palmar to show off his ability to learn quickly.

For his part, Nadal is one of the most experienced players on Tour when it comes to the Olympics. The Mallorcan is the only active male player to have won a gold medal in singles and doubles, a fitting record at the four-yearly event for one of the sport’s most legendary players.

At his academy’s graduation, Nadal reveals conversation about legacy with Federer

Spanish tennis legends Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya delivered inspiring speeches Wednesday at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar graduation. The 92-time tour-level titlist Nadal shared with the 52 graduates a story about an impactful conversation he had with rival and friend Roger Federer.

Although Nadal and Federer are widely regarded as two of the greatest players to ever touch a tennis racquet, the 38-year-old Spaniard revealed that he and the Swiss agree that there is something more important that they want to be remembered by.

“A few months ago I had the chance to visit the Italian Dolomites in the company of my friend and rival Roger Federer. There in the mountains, we had a very interesting conversation about a word that I think is very important: legacy,” Nadal said in Spanish.

“Both Roger and I agree on something we believe is of the utmost importance. How would we like to be remembered in a few years? How do we want the future generations to think of us? We are both very sure of our answers. It’s great that our achievements, our titles and our records are recognised, but as the years go by it is probable that someone will arrive and do something better.

“What is important, then, is that which will always be remembered. Therefore, both Roger and I agree that we would like to be remembered as good people. We live in a society that highlights the what and the now above all else. But I would like to highlight the importance of the how. When you are at university or on a tennis court, say to yourself occasionally, ‘How would I like my classmates to remember me? And my teachers? My friends?’ I could tell you to try and be influencers in your surroundings, but I prefer the term leaders. The people around you should see you as someone who should be copied because of their values.”

Hilarious Medvedev moment highlights ATP stars' grass-court predictions

Daniil Medvedev’s sense of humour and thoughtful— sometimes sarcastic — answers always provide entertainment.

The 28-year-old provided plenty of laughs in a new ATP Tour feature, during which Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz, amongst others, provided their grass-court predictions. Medvedev delivered the funniest moment of the piece.

“I don’t have a grass-court title, I will try to win Halle this year… No, I have one in Mallorca! Forget it,” Medvedev said with a smile, seemingly forgetting that he won a trophy on the surface in 2021.

Medvedev also delivered a surprise answer, naming a player outside the Top 40 of the PIF ATP Rankings when asked about a dark horse for the grass swing while several others agreed on a lefty inside the Top 20. Can you guess either player?

Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz chose a fellow Top 10 star to find success throughout the next month while Ben Shelton is eyeing a colleague to relive a standout 2023 run.

Musetti survives Koepfer scare in Stuttgart

Lorenzo Musetti reached his third tour-level grass-court quarter-final on Wednesday at the BOSS OPEN, where he clawed past Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 6-7(9), 7-6(5), 6-3.

The fifth-seeded Italian failed to convert five set points in the first set and then rallied from 3/5 in the second-set tie-break to stay alive in Stuttgart. He struck 15 winners in the third set to advance after two hours and 49 minutes.

“It was a really, really tough match,” Musetti said. “We saw two hours and a half of really good tennis. Dominik was playing really, really well... We were fighting until the end and I am really proud of myself.”

[ATP APP]

With his 13th win of the season, Musetti levelled his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Koepfer at 1-1. The No. 30 player in the PIF ATP Rankings also reached the quarter-finals in Stuttgart last year and will aim to go one step further this week when he next plays Alexander Bublik after the third seed defeated the 2023 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF champion Hamad Medjedovic 6-1, 7-6(4).

Former champ Berrettini earns hard-fought Stuttgart win, Giron beats Murray

Two-time BOSS OPEN champion Matteo Berrettini improved his impressive record in Stuttgart on Tuesday when he clawed past eighth seed Roman Safiullin 7-6(8), 5-7, 7-5 in a first-round thriller.

The Italian, playing for the first time since Monte-Carlo in April, saved one set point in the first set and raised his level in the decider. The former World No. 6 fired 13 aces in the third set and fended off all four break points he faced, according to ATP Infosys Stats, to advance after two hours and 57 minutes.

Berrettini clinched the crown in Stuttgart in 2019 and 2022 and will next meet Denis Shapovalov or Matteo Martineau at the grass-court ATP 250. Berrettini has often found his best level on grass. The 28-year-old won the Queen’s Club trophy in 2021 and 2022 and advanced to the Wimbledon final in 2021.

"First match after a few months and I was hoping for something easier," Berrettini joked. "I think I am really happy with the way I fought on court. After not playing for months it is not easy to comeback and play well and that is what I told myself, just to fight. Just to try to enjoy because I missed it and I am really happy to be back here."
