Zverev Stays Perfect vs. Mannarino With Cincinnati QF Win

Alexander Zverev extended his perfect Lexus ATP Head2Head record against Adrian Mannarino to 8-0 with a comfortable victory on Friday night at the Western & Southern Open. Zverev cruised through a 6-2, 6-3 win in just one hour, 12 minutes to set up a semi-final showdown with Novak Djokovic or Taylor Fritz.

"I feel like the matches that we played, we had a lot of tough battles. I've always played him at tournaments when I've been playing well," Zverev said of his unblemished record against the Frenchman.

"I know I have a pretty big game and when I'm feeling well on the court, there's just a lot of things I can do. That was maybe the reason. If I would have played him at a tournament where I'm not feeling well, if I'm not playing well, he's beaten a lot of great players in his career. It's just more about the days that I've played him."

The result also stretched Zverev's Cincinnati winning streak to eight matches following an 0-6 start in the Queen City, with the German back at the ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time since he won the 2021 title. After winning his first ATP Tour crown since the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals last month on home soil in Hamburg, Zverev is now through to his first Masters 1000 semi-final since the ankle injury he suffered last year at Roland Garros.

The 26-year-old's quarter-final win lifted him two places into the all-important eighth spot in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, though Fritz could reclaim the position with a win against Djokovic later on Friday evening. Zverev is also up five places this week to No. 12 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, and will re-enter the Top 10 with the Cincinnati title.

Murray/Venus Move Into Cincinnati SFs

Jamie Murray and Michael Venus toughed out a narrow victory Friday to reach the Western & Southern Open semi-finals.

The British-Kiwi duo defeated Italian wild cards Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(5), 7-6(7) after one hour, 59 minutes. Murray and Venus saved a set point in each set to reach the last four, where they will meet sixth seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin after the Mexican-French team stopped home hopes Christopher Eubanks and Ben Shelton 7-5, 6-7(5), 11-9 in front of a jam-packed Court 3.

Murray and Venus, who are aiming for their fourth tour-level title of the season, defeated Serbians Nikola Cacic and Novak Djokovic in the opening round before upsetting Wimbledon champions Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski. Should they capture their maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown as a team, Murray and Venus would rise inside the Top 8 of the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

In other doubles action, Argentines Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni cruised past Nikola Mektic and John Peers 6-4, 6-4 after winning 31 of their 35 first-serve points. They will face second seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek or Marcelo Melo and Alexander Zverev in the last four.

Alcaraz Passes Purcell Test, Reaches Cincinnati SFs

Carlos Alcaraz survived another three-set test at the Western & Southern Open on Friday, when he ended Australian qualifier Max Purcell’s dream run in Cincinnati.

After clawing past Jordan Thompson and Tommy Paul in deciding sets in his first two rounds, the World No. 1 was made to battle again in his quarter-final clash against Purcell, earning a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in two hours and 11 minutes.

"It was really tough. It was tricky today. He served really well. I think he played well at the net, but I think I played well. I returned well on court and that was the key to getting the win today, to return very well and to focus," Alcaraz said. "It was not easy but I am really, really happy to reach my seventh Masters 1000 semi-final and first here in Cincinnati."

Alcaraz is now two wins away from capturing his third ATP Masters 1000 title of the season, while he improved to 52-5 on the year. The top seed is the only player to have earned more than 50 tour-level wins in 2023, with second-placed Daniil Medvedev recording 49.

Alcaraz, who triumphed at Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Madrid earlier this year, holds a 22-3 record at this level in 2023. The Wimbledon champion will continue the quest for his seventh title of the year when he faces Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals on Saturday. Alcaraz overcame Hurkacz in three sets in Toronto last week.

Hurkacz Downs Popyrin For Cincinnati SF Spot

Hubert Hurkacz defied a remarkable late charge from Alexei Popyrin on Friday at the Western & Southern Open to complete a 6-1, 7-6(8) quarter-final triumph in Cincinnati.

The World No. 20 Hurkacz held five match points at 6/1 in the second-set tie-break before Popyrin reeled off seven straight points to bring up a set point of his own on centre court at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Hurkacz was able to overcome his late wobble, however, winning four of the next five points to complete a 77-minute victory and book a semi-final clash with top seed Carlos Alcaraz or qualifier Max Purcell.

Hurkacz had expertly capitalised on a nervous start by lucky loser Popyrin, who was competing in his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. Despite finding his feet after Hurkacz had raced to the opening set, Popyrin was unable to make an impact in return games. The Pole did not drop a break point and lost just nine points behind serve overall to extend his Lexus ATP Head2Head lead against Popyrin to 3-0.

“I’m really happy, especially with the way I played the first set,” said Hurkacz. “I was returning really well. Alexei raised his level and was serving really good throughout that second set, I just got to the tie-breaker. I got off to a good start, and then Alexei played some good points, but fortunately I battled through for that one.”

Now into his fifth Masters 1000 semi-final, the 2021 Miami champion Hurkacz is up two spots to 16th in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin as a result of his run so far in Ohio. The Pole could reignite his hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals by further prolonging his week in Cincinnati with victory against World No. 1 Alcaraz or Purcell.

“You come to every single match with the belief that you are going to win the match,” said Hurkacz ahead of his semi-final. “Otherwise there is no point in showing up. It’s always just prepare as good as you can, and you have to fight.”

Journey To The Pros: 18-Year-Old Prizmic Making Challenger Rise

Dino Prizmic's standout season on the ATP Challenger Tour is promising news for the future of Croatian tennis. While what lies ahead may excite fans, his background is a story of its own. The 18-year-old started playing tennis at Tenis Klub Split, where Goran Ivanisevic, Mario Ancic and Mate Pavic also learned the game.

The #NextGenATP star Prizmic recalls being age nine when Ivanisevic told him he was impressed with his game and encouraged him to keep working on his forehand and serve. Not too bad to hear from a former World No. 2.

At age 14, Prizmic started to take his tennis more seriously and moved to the capital city Zagreb, where there were more players to practise with.

[ATP APP]

Now, the teen is boasting positive results at the Challenger level that has helped lift him to a career-high No. 175 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, a vast improvement from a year ago, when he was outside the Top 800.

Dino Prizmic wins the 2023 Roland Garros boys' singles title.

Fantastic For Fans & Players: The Unique Cincinnati Experience

Just after midnight Wednesday morning at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre in Cincinnati, Carlos Alcaraz battled Jordan Thompson on centre court for a place in the third round of the Western & Southern Open.

Outside the stadium waiting at the players’ entrance was Nkeiru Green, a 46-year-old fan from New York who was hoping to meet Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian had lost his doubles match earlier in the evening. One of the perks of being a fan at the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 event is that fans have several opportunities to be close to their favourite stars.

“The intimacy of it, it's not as vast as New York. And you get the chance to actually feel as though you're much closer to the players, and you get to see all of them,” Green said. “So it's hard to see that many stars in one location [elsewhere]. And like I said, the intimacy of it, and also the accessibility of it — it's not so difficult to get here.”

At about 12:30 a.m., Auger-Aliassime walked out of the players’ lounge and was happy to meet Green, who has family in Cincinnati and has been attending the event every year it has been held in Mason since 2014. Throughout the day, passers-by will see dozens of fans like her camped out at the same player walkway to ask for autographs and selfies.

Nkeiru Green poses for a photo near the players' entrance in Cincinnati.
According to Western & Southern Open Tournament Director Todd Martin, the professionalisation of athletes and the tennis business in general have seen an evolution of the stars’ relationship with the community. But the Lindner Family Tennis Centre is designed to encourage plenty of interaction.

Djokovic Extends Monfils Dominance To Reach Cincinnati QFs

Nineteen Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings. Nineteen wins for Novak Djokovic against Gael Monfils.

The Serbian extended his dominance in the matchup into historic territory on Thursday at the Western & Southern Open. Following his 6-3, 6-2 victory, Djokovic now owns the most wins without a defeat in any Lexus ATP Head2Head matchup — breaking a tie with Rafael Nadal, who is 18-0 against Richard Gasquet.

"It was kind of an evolution of both players over the past 15-plus years that we've been playing each other in different parts of the world, also in juniors," Djokovic said of their history. "I think early on I struggled a lot with him, I think physically as well. When you play on of the most athletic guys on the Tour, you have to be ready, every ball comes back. A couple of points today, especially in the first set he showed his athleticism."

After a second-set retirement by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina handed Djokovic a win in his first match on American soil since 2021, the World No. 2 played two solid sets to dismiss Monfils, dominating the baseline rallies in a one-hour, eight-minute victory. With victory in his first completed match since he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, Djokovic remains on course for a potential rematch with the World No. 1 Spaniard in the title round.

Now 17-1 on hard courts this season, Djokovic is seeking his third Cincinnati title. His first Western & Southern Open crown in 2018 earned him a Career Golden Masters, completing his box set of trophies at the ATP Masters 1000. He repeated as champion in 2020, when the event was held in New York.

Murray/Venus Down Wimbledon Champs Koolhof/Skupski In Cincy

Jamie Murray and Michael Venus booked their quarter-final ticket at the Western & Southern Open on Thursday after upsetting top seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski.

Despite failing to convert any of their eight break point chances, Murray and Venus held their nerve to oust the Wimbledon champions 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 10-1. The British-Kiwi duo won 45 of their 49 first-serve points.

“I think that’s a big win for us,” Murray said. “This swing hasn’t been fantastic for us, but in doubles, any week can be your week. You just have to be ready with the scoring and everything and how it plays out. I think after Toronto we put a lot of good work in and it’s paid off so far. We’ve played two really good matches. That’s all we can ask for.”

[ATP APP]

Currently 12th in the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, Murray and Venus defeated Serbians Nikola Cacic and Novak Djokovic in the first round and will next aim to continue their run against wild cards Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego after the Italians beat Toronto champions Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-4, 7-6(5).

Rain Suspends Play With Alcaraz Leading Paul In Cincinnati Final Set

The latest intriguing chapter of Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul’s budding rivalry was interrupted by rain Thursday at the Western & Southern Open with the World No. 1 leading the American 7-6(6), 6-7(0), 4-3 in Cincinnati.

The rain arrived with Alcaraz leading in the third set after three hours and two minutes of absorbing action on the Cincinnati centre court. With Alcaraz serving at 15/15 with a break, the Spaniard is on course to avenge his quarter-final defeat to Paul in Toronto just seven days ago. The 20-year-old had three chances to notch a straight-sets win at the ATP Masters 1000 in Ohio, but Paul fended off three match points in a 12th game featuring nine deuces before racing to the tie-break to force a decider.

Alcaraz seeks to level his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Paul at 2-2 by completing victory in Ohio, where whomever prevails will take on Australian qualifier Max Purcell in the quarter-finals.

Purcell Stuns Wawrinka To Reach Cincinnati QFs; Popyrin Also Advances

Two Australians are through to their first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals after Thursday wins at the Western & Southern Open.

Max Purcell, who qualified into his first ATP Masters 1000 singles main draw last week in Toronto, cut through the blistering form of Stan Wawrinka in a 6-4, 6-2 result. Earlier in the day, lucky loser Alexei Popyrin scored a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory against Emil Ruusuvuori.

The 25-year-old Purcell backed up the biggest win of his career — an upset of World No. 7 Casper Ruud on Wednesday — with another stunning result against three-time major champion Wawrinka. The Swiss played what he called the best match of his season to beat 10th seed Frances Tiafoe in the previous round, but he could not solve the chip-and-charge game of Purcell.

[ATP APP]

The Aussie qualifier saved both break points he faced and broke three times in a straightforward win to continue his charge up the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. This week he is up 23 places to No. 47, setting himself up to break into the Top 50 for the first time in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. Purcell began the season at No. 220 and has won three ATP Challenger Tour titles on the year.

Why Popyrin Would Want To Be Alcaraz For A Day

Alexei Popyrin is showing in Cincinnati he is much more than lucky. A last-minute lucky loser into the main draw of the Western & Southern Open, he has taken full advantage by reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Popyrin booked a house for his team ahead of the tournament. However, because of how deep he has advanced, the Australian needed to shift to a hotel.

“I booked it until the 16th and didn't think I would be here. I'd be off to Winston-Salem,” Popyrin told ATPTour.com. “It was all going to plan until I got into the main draw as a lucky loser. I had to move the next day after my first-round match to move into a hotel. We moved in yesterday and here we are today.”

The 24-year-old is up to a career-high No. 40 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings after beginning the year No. 120. ATPTour.com caught up with Popyrin before he plays Hubert Hurkacz for a spot in the semi-finals.

If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be and why?
Damian Lillard, Tim Cahill and I would go Roger Federer. Damian Lillard is my favourite NBA player. He is one of my idols. I look up to him. I'm a big Portland Trailblazers fan, so he's one of my favourite players.

Hurkacz Serves Past Tsitsipas In Cincinnati

Hubert Hurkacz ended his barren run against Top 10 opponents in style Thursday at the Western & Southern Open, where the Pole downed fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4.

Hurkacz delivered a classy all-around display to overwhelm Tsitsipas, with his serve proving a devastating weapon on the Cincinnati centre court. The World No. 20 dropped just 10 points behind his delivery across the two sets, firing 11 aces as he snapped his six-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents that had stretched back to Montreal in 2022.

“I’m really pleased with the way I played, with the way I tried to use the conditions, because it was really tricky,” said Hurkacz, who had also not reached a Masters 1000 quarter-final since Montreal last year. “It was super windy, and the ball was definitely moving a lot. I’m really pleased with this victory because it has been a long time without a quarter-final in a Masters event. I’m happy with the victory and happy with the work with all my team.”

Hurkacz survived a break point to hold in the opening game of the match and then immediately broke for 2-0 to take control early in his 10th Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Tsitsipas. The 26-year-old Hurkacz, who lifted a Masters 1000 title in Miami in 2021, fended off another two break points in the seventh game but was untroubled behind serve thereafter. He completed a 65-minute triumph, just his third at tour-level against the Greek, to improve to 30-17 for the season.

Hurkacz’s quarter-final opponent in Cincinnati will be lucky loser Alexei Popyrin. The Australian earlier defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to reach his maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final on his Cincinnati debut.

Zverev Tops Medvedev In Cincinnati

Alexander Zverev earned his first Top 10 win of the season and snapped a four-match losing streak against Daniil Medvedev on Thursday when he moved past his long-running rival to reach the quarter-finals at the Western & Southern Open.

In windy conditions, the German found consistency in the key moments and showed great desire. He saved both break points he faced at 4-4, before he broke Medvedev’s serve in the next game to defeat the World No. 3 Medvedev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes. Zverev has now won his past eight matches in Cincinnati, having triumphed at the hard-court tournament in his previous appearance in 2021.

"It was very difficult conditions against a very difficult opponent," Zverev said. "He gives you nothing and you have to win the match yourself and that is what I did today and I am pleased with that.

"I tried to be patient and you just have to take your chances, your opportunities. You are not going to get many because we were both serving quite well. I lost three very tight matches earlier this year, so I am pleased to have finally won one today."

The 16th seed lost his three previous 2023 meetings against the World No. 3 in Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo and Miami. However, the 26-year-old would not be denied again, striking 36 winners to improve to 7-9 their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

500 Wins & Counting For Jean-Julien Rojer

Jean-Julien Rojer turns 42 years old in just more than a week, but you would not know it based on his performance. A week ago, the Dutchman claimed his 500th tour-level doubles win in Toronto and partnered Marcelo Arevalo to the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 title.

“I feel pretty good. I feel old, I'm older, turning 42 in a week. But it feels good. I try to keep fit and I'm quite disciplined with my training and my sleep, my diet, and to still be competing for these big events,” Rojer told ATPTour.com. “It makes me feel good and that's a part that I enjoy of tennis anyway, the competition, and trying to win the biggest events that we have on Tour. So it feels nice that you can still achieve some of those goals.”

Rojer is No. 7 in the Pepperstone ATP Doubles Rankings, just four spots off his career-high. It is impressive longevity for a player who earned his first tour-level victory in Davis Cup in 2001. He made the tough decision to leave his native Curacao as a junior to pursue a tennis career in Miami and has been a presence in the tennis world ever since.

“It's been an incredible journey. From where I come from, first of all, having to leave my house when I was 12 years old to pursue tennis. Those early years, of course there were very difficult moments,” Rojer said. “Then also going to university [at UCLA] and then deciding to turn pro. But then it didn't go so good in the singles… You're sitting there with the ups and downs that a lot of the players around here, they know all about it. And then eventually I decided to play doubles, which kind of took off right away.

“Singles was very difficult for me. But I felt very comfortable on the doubles court and then getting to play all the biggest tournaments that you always grew up watching on TV and meeting some of the players that you watched on TV and stuff, that whole process has been pretty cool.”

Two Injuries, Seven Weeks Off & A Long Road Back For Khachanov

Karen Khachanov made one of the best starts to 2023 of any player on the ATP Tour. But injury brought his season to a screeching halt and on Wednesday he confirmed that he is still not 100 per cent.

The 27-year-old played competitively for the first time since Roland Garros at this week’s Western & Southern Open, where he reached the second round of the doubles event with Robin Haase. Khachanov withdrew from singles.

“It feels great [to be back]. I'm really happy to say I was missing it. I was missing the tour, missing coming to the tournaments, competing. But unfortunately, I still couldn't play the singles this week,” Khachanov told ATPTour.com. “I'm still not ready, not really 100 per cent. I tried to play doubles, which was nice. I felt again a little bit of the atmosphere, even starting with doubles, and I’m just hoping really to keep improving day by day and to come back to the full competition soon.”

Khachanov was dealing with one injury since the Australian Open. During that time, he reached the semi-finals in Melbourne and Miami, and later reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

Ben Shelton consolidated his fifth-placed position (735 points) in the Pepperstone ATP Live Next Gen Race after advancing to the second round at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Cabal & Farah Announce Retirement: 'It's Hard To Say Goodbye'

Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah announced on Wednesday that they have set a date for the end of their respective careers in professional tennis. The Colombian two-time Grand Slam champions will play their last three events at the US Open, the Davis Cup series against Ukraine, and an ATP Challenger Tour event in Bogota that starts 25 September.

“This is not a knee-jerk reaction or something we decided from one day to the next. ‘Sebas’ and I have decided to complete a cycle in tennis,” Farah explained in a press conference in Bogota on Wednesday. “Obviously it’s a decision that brings a lot of emotions with it. It’s not easy, but now we want to prioritise new things in our lives.”

Cabal added, “We feel like we’re doing the right thing. It’s a difficult moment. We’ve been playing this sport for 30 years, dreaming of life at the top. It’s hard to say goodbye, but everything comes to an end, and this is a good point, we feel it is a good moment. It’s not because of the results. It’s because of the time for each of us.”

[ATP APP]

The end point started to materialise at the end of 2022. Family had already started to take up more space in both of their lives, and the wear and tear of so many years competing did nothing to make up for the time away from home. Nor did the injuries, such as the shoulder issue Farah picked up at the 2022 US Open, forcing him to have injections to play throughout 2023.

Wawrinka: 'I'm Finally Playing Better'

One of the most memorable moments of the season came during the trophy ceremony in Umag, where Alexei Popyrin defeated three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka in the final. Wawrinka was so close to claiming his first ATP Tour trophy since 2017, but was unable to finish off Popyrin.

During his remarks to the crowd, the Swiss was reduced to tears.

“Guys, thank you so much,” Wawrinka said. “I know it’s so stupid to cry, but I love this sport so much and you make it really special.”

Two weeks later, the 38-year-old is back in action at the Western & Southern Open, where he upset 2022 US Open semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe to reach the third round. The former World No. 3 has fond memories of his emotional moment in Croatia.

“It was great. It's always good to play a final,” Wawrinka told ATPTour.com. “Of course, I'm disappointed and sad to have lost the final. You always want to win the final, but it was a good tournament. Good to be back [playing] on a Sunday of the tournament. And again, things keep going. Now I'm in Cincinnati and I'm happy to play in America.”

Dodig/Krajicek Cruise In Cincinnati Opener

Second seeds Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek made a fast start to their Western & Southern Open title campaign on Thursday when they downed Robin Haase and Karen Khachanov 6-1, 6-4.

Aiming for their fifth title of the year, Dodig and Krajicek saved eight of nine break points faced to reach the quarter-finals, where they will next meet Marcelo Melo and Alexander Zverev or Hubert Hurkacz and Mate Pavic.

The Croatian-American pair Dodig and Krajicek, who won their maiden major team title at Roland Garros, have a chance at rising to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings this week if they win Cincinnati and Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski do not make it past the last eight.
