Harris Serves Past Zapata Miralles In Mallorca

After five months of hard work, Lloyd Harris tasted tour-level victory once again Monday at the Mallorca Championships.

The South African delivered a dominant serving performance to oust seventh seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-2, 7-6(2) and reach the second round at the grass-court ATP 250. It was a first tour-level victory since January for Harris, who came through qualifying to reach the main draw in Spain.

“It’s never easy. I feel like my preparation for the match was boosted by playing some matches in qualifying,” said Harris, who won 89 per cent (33/37) of points behind his first serve. “Obviously, he’s been doing really well… Playing in Spain, in front of a Spanish crowd [who gave] good support to him. I’m happy I got through.”

The former World No. 31 Harris missed the second half of 2022 after undergoing wrist surgery and has built his comeback gradually. The 26-year-old holds a 10-5 record for the season on the ATP Challenger Tour but arrived in Mallorca off the back of four consecutive defeats at tour-level.

With that streak now snapped, Harris’ next test in Mallorca is a maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with his fellow qualifier Roman Safiullin. The World No. 94 Safiullin defeated #NextGenATP Jordanian Abdullah Shelbayh 6-1, 6-4 in his opening match.

The grass season continued on the ATP Tour last week, when Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Bublik lifted trophies in London and Halle, respectively.

ATPTour.com looks at the movers of the week in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

[ATP APP]

No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, +1 (Joint Career High)
The Spaniard has returned to World No. 1 after winning his maiden grass-court title at the Cinch Championships. The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who has won five tour-level titles in 2023, defeated Alex de Minaur in the final to triumph on debut at the ATP 500 event.

No. 16 Alex de Minaur, +2
The 24-year-old has climbed two spots to No. 16 after reaching his second tour-level final of the season. The Australian overcame former World No. 1 Andy Murray en route to the championship match in London. De Minaur holds a 12-3 record at ATP 500 events this season after winning in Acapulco.

No. 25 Sebastian Korda, +7 (Career High)
The American has jumped to No. 25 after reaching his second semi-final of the season on the lawns in London. Korda advanced to the title match in Adelaide at the start of the year but was out from February until April with a wrist injury. The 22-year-old looked back to his best at The Queen’s Club, though.

Andrea Gaudenzi Reappointed As ATP Chairman

The ATP has confirmed that Andrea Gaudenzi has been re-elected as the Chairman of the organisation. The Italian has held the position since January 2020 and will now serve a second term, from 2024 through 2026.

Under Gaudenzi’s leadership the ATP has implemented some of the most radical reforms in its history as part of the OneVision strategic plan, aimed at establishing new foundations for the sport’s growth. Phase One, which came into effect in 2023, has already generated the largest single-year increase in player compensation in the organisation’s history, with an unprecedented US$37.5 million year-on-year increase across the ATP Tour and Challenger Tour.

“It’s an honour to be appointed for a second term as ATP Chairman, and continue serving the sport that has given me so much,” said Andrea Gaudenzi. “I’m proud of everything we’ve achieved since 2020, during a particularly challenging time for the world. OneVision has strengthened the ATP’s foundation, fostering a genuine partnership between players and tournaments. As we enter the second phase of our strategy, I am more convinced than ever that our sport has huge upside, and that we are well positioned to take advantage of the digital age. Together with the ATP Board and our members, I am committed to making our vision a reality in the coming years."

Enhancements implemented under OneVision include a groundbreaking 50-50 profit-sharing formula that aligns the interests of players and tournaments. The introduction of expanded 12-day ATP Masters 1000 tournaments has provided increased playing opportunities and prize money for more players. In parallel, leadership, integrity, and member representation have been advanced through governance reform. Meanwhile, new tournament category terms are unlocking unprecedented levels of investment into infrastructure and record valuations across the Tour’s biggest events.

On the Challenger Tour, significant enhancements have elevated the pathway for aspiring players. This includes a redesigned and expanded calendar, raised tournament standards, and record prize money of $21.1 million in 2023 (+75% on 2022). In addition, the ATP Player Pension contributions have hit record heights in recent years, growing more than 125% in 2022.

The Tour: I Am Zhang Zhizhen

Zhang Zhizhen has taken the ATP Tour by storm within the past year and is closing in on his Top 50 debut in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

According to the Chinese star, a light-hearted topic often comes up in conversation with his friends when he is enjoying time off the court.

“They really care about my haircut!” Zhang revealed in the latest edition of ATP Uncovered’s ‘I Am’ series. “Because my hair is curly [and] I had long hair some time last year, so they always started talking about my haircut!”

The Chinese No. 1 also revealed his childhood idol and the two-time major champion after whom he tried to model his two-handed backhand.

“When I was around 12 or 13, I tried [it] but it was not for me,” Zhang said. “I’d say it’s a little bit different.”

Wimbledon Qualifying Begins Monday; Kokkinakis Faces Tough Draw

Australian star Thanasi Kokkinakis is among the players who will be in action Monday at Wimbledon, where qualifying action will get underway.

There is a blockbuster first-round qualifying matchup between first seed Matteo Arnaldi, who upset Casper Ruud in Madrid, and Shang Juncheng. Shang has successfully qualified for the season’s first two majors.

Kubler Captures Ilkley Challenger Crown

Jason Kubler won his first ATP Challenger Tour title of the year Saturday at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy, where the fourth seed delivered a strong serving performance to be crowned champion.

The World No. 97, who is one of five Challenger champions this week, ousted Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-4, 6-4 in the final after winning 27 of 30 points behind his first delivery. The 30-year-old Kubler did not face a break point throughout the one-hour, 19-minute contest.

“It was just one of those days where I seemed to hit my spots very well on my serve, I seemed to put a lot of returns in when I needed it,” Kubler said in his on-court interview. “Then in those crucial points, I was able to find a shot or maybe at times force an error.”

[ATP APP]

Since 2000, Australian players have combined for a record 10 Challenger titles on grass, including World No. 18 Alex de Minaur and last year’s Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios. Kubler’s title run in Ilkley marked his eighth Challenger crown and first on grass.

Pella Wins Final-Set Tie-break In Mallorca

Guido Pella earned his first grass-court win since 2019 Wimbledon on Sunday when he battled past Marcos Giron 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) to reach the second round of the Mallorca Championships.

“Of course it was very tough. I know I can play good on grass, but you have to get used to this surface. It’s not like clay or hard courts,” Pella said. “You have to practise, practise and practise, and this is my fourth day I think, so it was very tough.”

The Argentine lefty trailed by a break in the third set, but rallied to earn a second-round showdown against fourth seed Adrian Mannarino.

In other action, Corentin Moutet eliminated Christopher O’Connell 7-5, 6-4. The Frenchman will play eighth seed Roberto Carballes Baena or Ilya Ivashka. They were tied at one-set apiece before play was suspended for the evening in Mallorca.

Federer & Middleton Spend Time With Wimbledon Ballkids

Roger Federer joined Princess of Wales Kate Middleton at Wimbledon for a fun hit and a meeting with the tournament’s ballkids.

Federer has long had a soft spot for ballkids around the world, having served as one himself when he was a junior in Basel. The Swiss legend, who retired at last year's Laver Cup, enjoyed returning to his childhood role in a video on Wimbledon's YouTube channel.

“This is proper practice, I’m really impressed,” Federer said.

The 41-year-old returned to the All England Club, where he lifted the trophy eight times. Federer earned a 105-14 record at the grass-court major during his career.

Although he will not be competing on the hallowed lawns this year, Federer was happy to give back and spend time with the ballkids alongside Middleton, who was also impressed by the kids' efforts.

Alcaraz To Reclaim World No. 1 From Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz will return to World No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday, reclaiming the spot from Novak Djokovic after winning the Cinch Championships.

Djokovic had just taken World No. 1 himself after winning his record 23rd major title at Roland Garros. Two weeks later, the 20-year-old Spaniard will pass the Serbian and begin his 26th week at the top of the men’s tennis mountain.

It will be the sixth time in 2023 that there has been a change at World No. 1, the most in a season since 2018 (seven). The six World No. 1 changes are the most in the first half of a year since 1983, when it swapped seven times through June.

Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings

 Player  Points
 1) Carlos Alcaraz  7,675
 2) Novak Djokovic  7,595
 3) Daniil Medvedev  5,890
 4) Casper Ruud  4,960
 5) Stefanos Tsitsipas  4,670

It has been a constant battle between Alcaraz and Djokovic through the first half of the season and there are no signs it will slow down any time soon. Alcaraz will retain World No. 1 through Wimbledon, but top spot will be up for grabs at the grass-court major.

Alcaraz Wins Queen's Club Title, Earns Return To World No. 1

Carlos Alcaraz secured his first grass-court title and a return to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings when he emerged victorious on Sunday at The Queen’s Club.

The top seed defeated gritty Australian Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 to lift the trophy at the Cinch Championships. On Monday, the Spaniard will pass Novak Djokovic for World No. 1.

“It means a lot to me. Being able to win this amazing tournament in my first time that I played here for me is fantastic,” Alcaraz said in his on-court interview. “To know that I’m [capable of] a good level on grass, obviously [to be] champion of every tournament feels special.”

[ATP APP]

Alcaraz has now won five ATP Tour titles this season, tying Daniil Medvedev for the Tour-lead. Entering the week, he owned just a 4-2 record on grass. But after needing a final-set tie-break to escape Arthur Rinderknech in his opening match, the 20-year-old surged to the crown without losing a set the rest of the week.

Brilliant Bublik Beats Rublev For Halle Crown

Alexander Bublik put his past grass-court heartache behind him in style Sunday at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. The inimitable Kazakhstani delivered a classy all-around performance to down Andrey Rublev 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the championship match at the ATP 500 for the biggest title of his career.

Bublik stepped on court inside OWL Arena with an 0-2 record in grass-court tour-level finals after he fell just short of the title in Newport in both 2019 and 2022. Yet he showed no sign of nerves on Sunday, particularly in an opening set during which he delighted the Halle crowd with clean, imaginative shotmaking, as he clinched a 95-minute triumph against the third-seeded Rublev.

“It really means the world to me,” said Bublik after his win. “I’ve been struggling for half a year and now having this a reward, I don’t take it for granted. It was hard work. I was walking through the little hall of fame here before entering the court for the very first time against Struff [in the second round], and I was like ‘Wow, the different names, a lot of guys I’m familiar with. That would be nice maybe to have it one day’.

“But I could not even imagine that I would win this tournament, and I’m really, really happy.”

As he had all week in Halle, Bublik produced a dominant serving performance to limit the big-hitting Rublev’s opportunities on return. The Kazakhstani’s level from the baseline was also consistently high, as he disrupted his opponent’s rhythm with a mixture of huge groundstrokes and drop shots.

Scouting Report: Tsitsipas, Fritz Defend Respective Titles in Mallorca, Eastbourne

The final two ATP Tour events before Wimbledon will take place next week in Mallorca and Eastbourne, with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz returning to defend their titles at the respective ATP 250s.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Ben Shelton are among the other top seeds in Mallorca, while Tommy Paul and Alex de Minaur join Fritz in Eastbourne.

ATPTour.com looks at five things to watch at each grass-court tournament.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH IN MALLORCA
1) Can Tsitsipas Build Momentum?: The defending champion Greek enters with a 1-2 grass-court record this season after early exits in Stuttgart and Halle. But happy memories from last year in Mallorca could spark his grass-court season to life ahead of Wimbledon. The Greek, who will open against Yannick Hanfmann or Pedro Cachin after a first-round bye, has not won a title since last year at the Spanish event.

Improving by the match on the grass courts of the Cinch Championships, Carlos Alcaraz moved into his first final on the surface with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Sebastian Korda.

With victory against Alex de Minaur in Sunday's final at The Queen's Club in London, the Spaniard would reclaim the top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings from Novak Djokovic and secure the No. 1 seed at Wimbledon. Through to his 14th tour-level final, he is seeking his 11th title.

De Minaur Advances To Queen's Club Title Match

Alex de Minaur reached his second tour-level final of the season on Saturday when he defeated second seed Holger Rune 6-3, 7-6(2) at the Cinch Championships in London.

The Australian has a strong record on grass, winning the title in Eastbourne in 2021 and advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year. He demonstrated his pedigree on the surface once again in his semi-final clash against the Dane, moving well and committing just nine unforced errors to advance after one hour and 40 minutes.

De Minaur now holds a 12-2 record at ATP 500 events this season, having captured this biggest title of his career in Acapulco in February. The World No. 18, who defeated former World No. 1 Andy Murray in the first round, will chase his eighth tour-level title on Sunday when he meets Carlos Alcaraz or Sebastian Korda.

Rune arrived in London having never earned a tour-level grass-court win. The 20-year-old found his range on the surface this week, though, defeating Maxime Cressy, Ryan Peniston and Lorenzo Musetti to reach his sixth semi-final of the year.
