My Influences: Quinn on 'grounded' Sinner & Paul's mentorship

From Jannik Sinner to Tommy Paul, 20-year-old Ethan Quinn has quickly developed relationships with the biggest stars on the ATP Tour in recent years.

The American trained with World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings Jannik Sinner in the leadup to the 2023 US Open and has been close to countryman Paul since he was young.

As part of our Next Gen Influences series, Quinn caught up with ATPTour.com to talk about Sinner, Paul and other inspirations in his life.

[ATP APP]

We've had six Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF champions at this point. Who do you look up to from that group?
I feel like Jannik is a good example. I got to share the court with him last year in the Hamptons leading up to the US Open. I got to get his insights and everything. He's accomplished so much for being just a year or two older than I am, but just hearing his process and just what should be important for me, it was really nice getting to just chat with him.

I actually walked into the locker room [during the US Open] and I saw him, and I was able to just give him a handshake, which I feel like a lot of the top guys, maybe they wouldn't do that for someone [like me]. I was ranked 250 in the world and I'm not from the same nation. To be able to be recognised by a guy like that is pretty nice, just to be able to get his thoughts. From a Grand Slam champion, I really appreciated it.

Zverev survives Griekspoor scare, reaches fourth round in Shanghai

Alexander Zverev survived a scare on Tuesday against Tallon Griekspoor in the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, requiring eight match points to book his ticket to the last 16.

With the triumph, Zverev is into the fourth round of a ninth consecutive ATP Masters 1000, still alive in his quest for a second title in 2024. The World No. 3 regrouped from an out-of-sorts second set to prevail 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-6(5) and extend his lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series to 5-1.

“It was a tough match, going back and forth. I thought he was a bit lucky during the third set and I got very lucky in the tie-break, so we equalled each other out,” said Zverev, who is making his sixth appearance in Shanghai.

“It was an incredible match, he is someone that I always struggle against. We always have extremely tough matches and, for me, he should be a lot higher ranked than he is. He needs to look at why he is not playing like that every single week. He could be Top 15, Top 10 in the world.”

Granollers/Zeballos make confident start to Shanghai title defence

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos wasted little time getting back to winning ways in their opening match at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

Having lifted the title at the Chinese ATP Masters 1000 last year, the Spaniard and Argentine began their 2024 campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Miguel Reyes-Varela and John-Patrick Smith on Tuesday afternoon. Granollers and Zeballos won 85 per cent (35/41) of first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to a 77-minute win. They will next take on Jamie Murray and John Peers, who beat Ugo Humbert and Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-0.

[ATP APP]

The second and third-seeded pairs in Shanghai could not join Granollers and Zeballos in the second round. Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen upset second seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 2-6, 6-3, 10-5. It was the Belgian duo’s first win in three Lexus ATP Head2Head clashes this year against Arevalo and Pavic, who lead the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings.

Toyko champions Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool continued their good form on the hard courts of Asia by downing third seeds Matthew Ebden and Lloyd Glasspool 7-6(6), 7-6(3). Their next assignment in Shanghai is a rematch against their Tokyo championship-match opponents, Ariel Behar and Robert Galloway.

Djokovic dominates Cobolli, advances to fourth round in Shanghai

Novak Djokovic passed the latest test in his quest for a 100th tour-level title with flying colours on Tuesday as he overpowered Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

In a contest that thoroughly contrasted his opener against #NextGenATP American Michelsen, Djokovic surged to a dominant win over Cobolli in their maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting.

“From the beginning I had a clear game plan of what I needed to do, staying aggressive and trying to use every short ball to take the initiative in the point,” said Djokovic, who improved to 34-8 on the season. “Cobolli was evidently exhausted after last night’s match [against Stan Wawrinka]. I think that has taken a toll, physically, on him today.

“I haven’t played too many matches, I think the positive in that is that I’m fresh, so I am happy to play every day [for] as long as it takes.”

Dimitrov powers past Popyrin in Shanghai for 40th win of year

Is the Rolex Shanghai Masters where Grigor Dimitrov makes his move in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin?

The Bulgarian dealt with a tough third-round draw in style on Tuesday at the Chinese ATP Masters 1000 event, where he overcame Alexei Popyrin 7-6(5), 6-2. Dimitrov held firm in a tight first set before accelerating to a victory in which he won 97 per cent (33/34) of points behind his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

With his 40th tour-level victory of 2024, Dimitrov consolidated 10th place in the Live Race. The 33-year-old knows that a deep run in Shanghai could significantly boost his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals, where he lifted the trophy on his only previous appearance in 2017.

“One day at a time at the moment for me,” said Dimitrov, who has struggled on and off with injury since he was forced to retire from his US Open quarter-final against Frances Tiafoe in August. “There’s been so many things that have been moving around, and at the same time I’m very thankful to be out here again. At the same time, putting matches together under my belt, back-to-back, is very important for me.”

Tsitsipas sets Medvedev showdown with confident Shanghai victory

Stefanos Tsitsipas will rekindle his rivalry with Daniil Medvedev after beating Alexandre Muller on Tuesday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. The Greek's 6-3, 7-5 win set up a 14th Lexus ATP Head2Head matchup with Medvedev, their first meeting in nearly a year.

In a match delayed two days by rain, Tsitsipas was in command against Muller until he lost serve in his attempt to close out the match at 5-3 in set two. But he regrouped to break at love in the final game, finding the range on his forehand to bring up match points and then ripping the shot of the match — a wicked, running forehand pass — to seal the deal.

— ATP Tour (@atptour) October 8, 2024

The 10th seed picked up his 200th hard-court win by beating Kei Nishikori in his opener and saved the first six break points he faced in Shanghai — three against Nishikori and three against Muller — before a net cord sent a groundstroke long to hand Muller a lifeline. After firing 14 aces against Nishikori, Tsitsipas managed seven against Muller according to Infosys ATP Stats. He expertly backed up his serve against the Frenchman, winning more than 70 per cent of points on both his first and second deliveries.

Through to the last 16 at an ATP Masters 1000 for the fourth time this year, the reigning Monte-Carlo champion will next face fifth seed Medvedev for a place in the Shanghai quarter-finals. Medvedev won his first five meetings against Tsitsipas before the Greek answered back with a group-stage win en route to the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals title. Medvedev leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head 9-4, including wins in both of their 2023 meetings, in the Rome and Vienna semi-finals.

Basavareddy banks first Challenger title, Comesana triumphs on 24th birthday

Nishesh Basavareddy will not soon forget Sunday at the ATP Challenger Tour 75 event in Tiburon, California, where the 19-year-old claimed his maiden trophy at that level in his home state.

#NextGenATP Basavareddy is the second American teen to triumph on the ATP Challenger Tour this season, alongside fellow California native Learner Tien, who won in Bloomfield Hills and Las Vegas.

Basavareddy, who fell to Tien in the Bloomfield Hills final, lost in his three previous title match appearances on the Challenger Tour, but he had no trouble in Tiburon. He raced past Eliot Spizzirri 6-1, 6-1 in just 61 minutes. The World No. 193 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings was aggressive on return, dropping just four second-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

[ATP APP]

“I think that is definitely a big asset in my game and probably one of the biggest strengths in my game,” Basavareddy told commentator Mike Cation. “I think that can go a long way because a lot of these guys serve big and if you can neutralise the serves and almost get ahead in the point, I feel like I’m just as good as all these guys from the baseline.

“Especially second-serve points, my coach always says, ‘Second-serve return points and second-serve points won kind of decide who is winning matches all the time because everyone can defend their first serve really well and win points there’. If you can defend your second serve and attack other guys’ second serve, you can win a lot of matches. I think that’s been a big focus for me.”

Rune rebuffs Berrettini’s barrage for third-round spot in Shanghai

A long wait for his opening match at the Rolex Shanghai Masters proved to be worth it for Holger Rune.

The Dane delivered a resilient performance to down Matteo Berrettini 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a high-quality encounter on Monday at the ATP Masters 1000. After Rune received a bye in the opening round, his second-round clash with Berrettini was originally scheduled for Saturday. Although persistent rain ultimately kept the players waiting two days longer, they did not disappoint when they finally stepped onto Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

Rune withstood 16 aces from Berrettini, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to a comeback victory featuring plenty of cat-and-mouse exchanges. The 12th seed stayed patient on return to notch late breaks of serve in both the second and third sets and claim his maiden Shanghai win at the second attempt.

“I think [the match] was pretty good,” said Rune, who now leads Berrettini 3-1 in the pair's Lexus ATP Head2Head series. “It felt like he didn’t do many things wrong in the first set. I made a few errors, but then he was just on me. He didn’t allow me to make many mistakes. I think the same happened in the second and third sets, just the other way around. Every time he got slightly central or short, I was there to punish his shots.

Tie-break Taylor! Fritz squeezes past Atmane in Shanghai

It may have taken 48 hours, but Taylor Fritz ensured his big plans for the final stretch of the 2024 season remain on course with a hard-earned opening victory Monday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

The American kept his cool in the face of a free-spirited performance from Terence Atmane to secure a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) triumph at the Chinese ATP Masters 1000. After rain forced the second-round clash to be suspended with Fritz leading 4-3 on serve on Saturday afternoon, the seventh seed on Monday completed a two-hour, three-minute victory under the roof inside Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

The US Open finalist Fritz remains fifth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and is in a strong position to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, where he made his debut in 2022. Yet the American was determined to take things one step at a time after passing a tough test from Atmane in the pair’s maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash.

“I don’t want to speak too soon, but I think I’m in a good position,” said Fritz. “I’m not thinking so much about the goal of reaching the finals right now, because I’m fifth in the Race. If the goal is that and I get panicky, it would be like, ‘Let’s just not slip four spots’. My goal right now is to finish the year in the Top 5, keep my place. I think that’s just a better mindset to have, both to qualify for the finals and play good tennis for the rest of the year.”

Rain affects Monday's Shanghai schedule, Fritz & Dimitrov win under roof

Play has been affected by rain for the third consecutive day at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

The Monday schedule at the ATP Masters 1000 event has been reduced to 13 singles matches, with no play yet possible on outdoor courts. However, three matches have been completed inside Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, which is fitted with a retractable roof.

[ATP APP]

Taylor Fritz kicked off the day by completing a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) second-round victory, one which began on Saturday before a two-day rain delay, against Terence Atmane. The No. 7 in the PIF ATP Rankings was followed onto court by his fellow Top 10 star Grigor Dimitrov, who overcame Zizou Bergs 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Frances Tiafoe then defeated home wild card Yi Zhou 6-2, 6-4 to round out the afternoon session on the Stadium Court. The two Lexus ATP Head2Head matchups scheduled for Monday's night session are 12th seed Holger Rune’s clash with Matteo Berrettini, and Flavio Cobolli against Stan Wawrinka.

After two days of inclement weather, tournament organisers moved four matches to indoor courts to help relieve pressure on the schedule. Roman Safiullin resumed his second-round meeting with Alexander Bublik at 2-1 in the first set, and he went on to down the 23rd seed 6-4, 6-2. Tallon Griekspoor was also a winner indoors: The Dutchman eased past 26th seed Jordan Thompson 6-3, 6-2.

Alcaraz spoils Chinese party, defeats Wu in Shanghai

Carlos Alcaraz was forced to battle hard on Sunday as he earned his eleventh consecutive win to advance to the Rolex Shanghai Masters fourth round.

The World No. 2 showed glimpses of his most scintillating tennis as he soared to a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over wild card Wu Yibing, his 50th tour-level win of the year. Having clinched his fourth title of the season at the China Open earlier this week, Alcaraz remains unbeaten since his shock second-round exit at the US Open and has now claimed 100 hard-court wins.

“He is recovering his level. He’s coming back from injury, but his level deserves to be at the top for sure,” Alcaraz said of Wu. “If he keeps playing at this level, I’m pretty sure I’m going to see him around more often. I’m just really happy to get through.

“I don’t want to say I was surprised, but it was the first time I was playing against him. He just beat [Nicolas] Jarry really easily, 6-2, 6-2, so that’s impressive. I had to be focused on playing my best. I’m not used to feeling the feelings I had on the court. He is a really powerful player, plays really strong, so I felt like I was not dominating the game.”

Medvedev survives Shanghai scare from Arnaldi

Daniil Medvedev dug deep on Sunday to maintain his bid for a first title of 2024 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

The No. 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings rallied to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Matteo Arnaldi to book his fourth-round spot at the ATP Masters 1000 event. Medvedev held firm to prevail after two hours and 44 minutes in an absorbing encounter full of extended rallies.

“It was a very tough match, a very close one,” said Medvedev. “I actually felt like that’s where tennis is funny. I felt like in the first set, I was probably the better player, had more opportunities. I didn’t manage to [win] it, played a bad game at the end of the set.

“In the other sets, I thought it was closer. Maybe even he had the edge on some of the moments, but that’s why tennis is crazy. You can win when you don’t expect it, and lose when you expect to win, so I’m happy to be here again in two days.”
