Eastbourne: Tomic wins, Gavrilova falls
Eastbourne, UK, 27 June 2017 | tennis.com.au/AAP
Bernard Tomic is into the second round of the Eastbourne ATP event after beating Norbert Gombos 7-6(3) 6-3 on Monday.
Tomic, the world No.60, needed little more than an hour to get the better of qualifier and world No.90 Gombos, who could only convert one of three break point opportunities.
For Tomic it is a timely win ahead of Wimbledon next week and the third successive tournament the 24-year-old has registered a first-round victory.
In both of those previous two tournaments Tomic then fell in the second round, to Richard Gasquet in Halle and Tomas Berdych in Stuttgart.
At Eastbourne, Tomic will face the winner of Mischa Zverev and Ryan Harrison, who play on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Daria Gavrilova was knocked out of the concurrent WTA event, losing her second-round match 6-2 2-6 3-6 to qualifier Lara Arruabarrena.
Gavrilova, the No.16-seed, served five double faults in the two hour and eight minutes-long match.
After receiving a bye in the first round at Eastbourne, the 23-year-old Australian heads to Wimbledon still with the knowledge that she produced fine grasscourt form in Birmingham last week.
There she reached the quarterfinals before a three-set, three-hour loss to Lucie Safarova.
At the inaugural ATP event in Antalya, Turkey, Matt Ebden fell in the opening round to Yuichi Sugita on Monday.
The Japanese beat the Aussie qualifier 6-1 6-3 at the 250-level grasscourt event.
