Daria Gavrilova faces a third-round meeting with top seed Angelique Kerber at the Aegon International Eastbourne, the final women’s grasscourt tune-up event before Wimbledon.
Gavrilova, seeded 16th, received a first-round bye and in the last 32 will take on Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena.
Should she win that, she faces a projected third-round meeting with Kerber, who must get past the winner of the match between Kristyna Pliskova and Naomi Broady.
Gavrilova arrives at Eastbourne in good form on grass, having reached the quarterfinals last week in Birmingham and stretching former world No.5 Lucie Safarova all the way in a thrilling, three-hour match.
At the ATP event in Eastbourne – played alongside the women’s event for the first time since 2014 – Bernard Tomic will fly the Aussie flag when he faces Slovak qualifier Norbert Gombos.
The winner faces a likely meeting in the second round with No.6 seed Mischa Zverev, the serve-and-volleying German who begins against Ryan Harrison.
Tomic last week beat Tommy Haas in Halle before falling to Richard Gasquet.
At the inaugural ATP grasscourt event in Antalya, Turkey, West Australian Matt Ebden has qualified for the main draw and will face Japan’s Yuichi Sugita.
Ebden arrived at this point after scoring two wins in qualifying, the second and final one being in three tight sets over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.
Wimbledon qualifying also kicks off this week, with nine Aussies featuring across the men’s and women’s singles draws at Roehampton.
The Aussie men boast a six-strong contingent with Sam Groth, Andrew Whittington, Blake Mott, Alex De Minaur, Mark Polmans and John-Patrick Smith all lining up for the event, which begins on Monday in London.
