Australian junior Alexei Popyrin is through to the Boys’ singles final at Roland Garros. The 17 year-old from Sydney needed exactly one hour to beat regular doubles partner Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4 6-2 in the semifinals.
In a tight first set the pair traded breaks before Popyrin was able to take the decisive advantage. Carrying the momentum into the second set, Popyrin was able to break Fokina on three occasions to serve out his place in Saturday’s title match.
Popyrin is aiming to become the first Aussie junior to lift the Roland Garros title since Phil Dent in 1968. Greg Jones, a runner-up in 2007, was our last junior finalist.
