Tomljanovic hungry for action

Ajla Tomljanovic, who skipped the grasscourt swing, is back healthy and with wins under her belt as she targets a strong campaign at the US Open.

New York, NY, USA, 28 August 2017 | Darren Walton (AAP)

A revitalised Ajla Tomljanovic hopes her decision to skip Wimbledon pays dividends with an inspired US Open run.

Tomljanovic is among three Australian women in first-round action at Flushing Meadows on Monday and says she can’t wait after a wretched 18-month battle with injury.

The one-time world No.47 missed all but two events in 2016 following shoulder surgery and opted to sit out Wimbledon in order to save her last use of an injury-protected ranking for New York.

Millman to Kyrgios: let’s get physical

John Millman will attempt to extend rallies as much as possible to make it a physical first-round encounter against fellow Aussie and 14th seed Nick Kyrgios.

New York, NY, USA, 28 August 2017 | Darren Walton (AAP)

John Millman plans on dragging Nick Kyrgios out of his comfort zone and turning their all-Australian first-round US Open showdown into a physical battle.

The underdog believes that’s his only hope.

Kyrgios enters the final Grand Slam of the year as the 14th seed and a title smoky after his charge to a first Masters 1000 final last week in Cincinnati, leaving the 176th-ranked Millman cursing his bad luck once more.

Rodionova read to roll at US Open

Arina Rodionova is looking to continue her recent momentum when she takes on Dutchwoman Richel Hogenkamp in the first round of the US Open.

New York, NY, USA, 28 August 2017 | Darren Walton (AAP)

She was Australia’s best Wimbledon performer so it’s hardly surprising that Arina Rodionova now feels she belongs among the tennis elite.

Rodionova plays Dutchwoman Richel Hogenkamp in the first round of the US Open on Tuesday, feeling pumped about her main-draw debut after winning Australia’s wildcard playoff.

“Obviously it’s great to be in the main draw of a slam but I had a good year, so it didn’t come as a complete surprise to me this time,” Rodionova told AAP.

Barty back in New York for first time in three years

The 2014 US Open was the last tournament Ash Barty played before taking an extended break from tennis. Now she's back as a top-50 star.

New York, NY, USA, 28 August 2017 | Darren Walton (AAP)

The last time Ash Barty was at the US Open she was about to walk away from tennis.

Three years on and Australia’s former junior prodigy has re-established herself as one of the hottest talents in the game and a dark horse to avoid at Flushing Meadows.

The 21-year-old has rocketed from 325th in the rankings in January to world No.43 after a breakout season featuring her maiden WTA title in Malaysia and head-turning wins over Grand Slam champions Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza.
