Aussies juniors ready to compete in the Czech Republic

Australia's top tennis 14-and-under junior boys' and girls' set to take on world's best at ITF World Junior Tennis Finals.

2 August 2017 | Tennis Australia

Seven of Australia’s best 14-and-under junior tennis players will travel to Prostejov, Czech Republic to compete in the prestigious ITF World Junior Tennis Finals from Monday 7 to Friday 12 August.

Australia qualified in both the junior girls’ and boys’ divisions after placing first and third respectively in their Asia / Oceania qualifying events held earlier this year in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Australian girls’ team will feature Annerly Poulos (Canberra, ACT), Lara Walker (Brisbane, Qld) and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz (Glengowrie, SA) with Tennis Australia National Women’s Tennis Manager Rohan Fisher named as the team captain.

Thompson cruises into second round

Australian Jordan Thompson is into the second round of the Citi Open in Washington DC after a straight-sets victory over Belgian Ruben Bemelmans.

World No.75 Thompson won 6-3 6-2 in the first round of the ATP event in the US capital on Tuesday, setting up a clash with young gun Alexander Zverev.

He was dominant on serve against Bemelmans, breaking his world No.98 opponent five times in the match and winning 80 per cent of points on first serve to 61.

Thanasi Kokkinakis says that any wins he can accrue in his comeback from shoulder surgery are significant for his confidence going forward.

The young Aussie, who missed 19 months of singles play as he struggled to rebound from shoulder surgery in last 2015, returned to the court in May and has been making incremental progress in his return.

The latest result was a hard-fought, first-round win over Frances Tiafoe at the ATP event in Los Cabos.
