Approach Shot Drill

approachshottips

The approach shot is critical when transitioning from baseline play to the net. This drill helps improve your ability to move forward and execute a solid shot while preparing for a volley or overhead. Here's how to do it:

Objective:

To practice hitting an effective approach shot and transitioning to the net for a volley.

How to Perform the Drill:
  1. Start at the Baseline:
    • Begin by positioning yourself at the baseline on one side of the court.
  2. Hit a Deep Shot (Groundstroke):
    • Start with a groundstroke (forehand or backhand), aiming for the corners of the court.
    • The goal is to make your opponent move and set up a weak return, which you can take advantage of.
  3. Prepare for the Approach Shot:
    • After your groundstroke, be ready to move forward as your opponent responds.
    • As soon as you see them hitting a weaker shot, quickly step forward to the baseline and prepare for your approach shot.
  4. Hit the Approach Shot:
    • When you reach the appropriate distance (about halfway between the baseline and the service line), hit an approach shot.
    • The approach shot should be hit with more depth and pace, usually with a topspin forehand or backhand. The goal is to hit the ball deep into the opponent's court to force them into a defensive position, typically towards the back corners.
  5. Transition to the Net:
    • After hitting the approach shot, immediately move forward to the net.
    • Anticipate a return from your opponent and be prepared to hit a volley or an overhead shot.
  6. Finish the Drill:
    • Once you reach the net, take the time to work on your volley technique or overhead shots as needed.
    • Repeat the sequence for several reps, alternating sides between forehand and backhand approach shots.
Variation for Progression:
  • Challenge with Movement: After hitting your approach shot, sprint forward and make the transition to the net faster.
  • Alternate Shots: Mix in different types of approach shots such as slice or flat shots depending on the situation, and incorporate volleys and overheads once you reach the net.
  • Partner Drill: Have a partner feed balls to you, making sure to keep you on the move and varying the speed or direction of the ball.
Tips for Success:
  • Hit with Confidence: The approach shot is often hit with more aggression, so make sure you strike the ball with enough pace and depth.
  • Use the Right Grip: For better control and depth, use the appropriate grip based on whether you're hitting a forehand or backhand approach shot.
  • Stay Low: As you approach the net, stay low and ready for a volley or an overhead, keeping your body balanced.
  • Anticipate the Return: Keep your eye on the ball and anticipate your opponent's next move as you approach the net.

This drill will help you improve your transition game, enabling you to move from the baseline to the net with more precision and confidence.
