Approach Shot Drill

The approach shot is critical when transitioning from baseline play to the net. This drill helps improve your ability to move forward and execute a solid shot while preparing for a volley or overhead. Here's how to do it:

Objective:

To practice hitting an effective approach shot and transitioning to the net for a volley.

How to Perform the Drill:
  1. Start at the Baseline:
    • Begin by positioning yourself at the baseline on one side of the court.
  2. Hit a Deep Shot (Groundstroke):
    • Start with a groundstroke (forehand or backhand), aiming for the corners of the court.
    • The goal is to make your opponent move and set up a weak return, which you can take advantage of.
  3. Prepare for the Approach Shot:
    • After your groundstroke, be ready to move forward as your opponent responds.
    • As soon as you see them hitting a weaker shot, quickly step forward to the baseline and prepare for your approach shot.
  4. Hit the Approach Shot:
    • When you reach the appropriate distance (about halfway between the baseline and the service line), hit an approach shot.
    • The approach shot should be hit with more depth and pace, usually with a topspin forehand or backhand. The goal is to hit the ball deep into the opponent's court to force them into a defensive position, typically towards the back corners.
  5. Transition to the Net:
    • After hitting the approach shot, immediately move forward to the net.
    • Anticipate a return from your opponent and be prepared to hit a volley or an overhead shot.
  6. Finish the Drill:
    • Once you reach the net, take the time to work on your volley technique or overhead shots as needed.
    • Repeat the sequence for several reps, alternating sides between forehand and backhand approach shots.
