Rafael Nadal will be returning to Brisbane International in 2018

Fifteen-time Grand Slam champion and new world No.1 Rafael Nadal has confirmed his highly anticipated return to the tenth edition of the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp in January.

“A lot of things have happened since the last time I was in this spot. Injuries and some tough moments, of course, but I have held the passion and the love for the game, and that’s why I have the chance to be back in that position again,” Nadal said prior to the Cincinnati Masters last week.

Nadal played Brisbane for the first time in January, with the tournament proving the ideal preparation for his Australian Open campaign after the 31-year-old reached the final at Melbourne Park against career rival Roger Federer (SUI).

“I’m very happy to be back, last year for me was the first experience and was very successful.  The atmosphere is great and there’s a lot of nice people supporting the event. I really enjoyed the experience.”

"He obviously is a tough match always," said Nadal. "Nick is a great player, but I played poorly. I started the match well and then I played a very bad game in the second set when he broke me. I played some good points. He had some mistakes and I was able to be back in the match. And then I played a terrible game. So it was a bad match for me. Congrats to him. That's it."

"I love this tournament so much. It is improving every year. But I don't know why I don't find my rhythm here. It is tough for me to compete well here. But I'm going to keep trying next year."

Nick Kyrgios has upset Rafael Nadal to book his place in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters and secure his 100th win on the ATP World Tour. The Australian, who had earlier downed Ivo Karlovic in three tight sets, dominated Nadal as he secured a 6-2 7-5 win in one hour 20 minutes.

In what was an impressive performance throughout, Kyrgios raced away to a 4-0 lead at the start of the match. Nadal was able to work his way onto the scoreboard, but Kyrgios’s serve was firing and he was connecting brilliantly on his ground strokes.

It was a similar story in the second set.

US Open Wildcard playoff: Aiava, Cabrera advance

Melbourne & Olympic Parks, Olympic Blvd, Melbourne VIC • 3001, Australia, 19 August 2017 | Tennis Australian

The semifinals are set for Day 2 of the US Open wildcard playoff.

Due to intermittent rain forecasted for much of the day, a decision was made to move the matches indoors. Fortunately, the Yale Tennis Facility has eight prestige indoor courts and a 30-person viewing area (which was full to capacity).

In the day’s first match, Destanee Aiava was too strong for Kimberly Birrell during her 6-1 6-1 win. Aiava served accurately and effectively, refusing to allow Birrell the time to dial in her normally aggressive returns. Aiava, the No.3 seed. will now play Arina Rodionova in tomorrow’s the semifinals. Arina advanced through to the next round after Priscillla Hon was forced to withdraw from the event because of her impressive run at the $100k ITF in Vancouver.

The big-serving Croatian took the first set when play resumed but Kyrgios fought back via a second-set tiebreaker, showing the Ohio crowd a preview of his dance moves in celebration.

So I just need to be ready, to play my best. The only way to try to have success in that match against Nick is just playing aggressive and play very focused all the time, and, of course play at a great level of tennis."

Nick Kyrgios has fought back to beat Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov and advance to the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Kyrgios recovered from dropping an early break in the first set to win 6-3 7-6(6) in a match which saw both players bemused to learn they had been serving with women’s balls for six points.

While the balls used on the men’s and women’s tour generally have the same size and pressure, the men usually use extra-duty felt to slow the speed of the ball down while the women use regular-duty balls which have a different logo.
