Barty shooting for top 50

After a better-than-expected season, Ash Barty has been forced to reassess her goals - which now including finishing the season inside the top 50.

Ash Barty’s return to tennis has proven extremely fruitful.

Just over a year into her comeback to singles after a near two-year hiatus, the Queenslander has shot up the rankings and now sits at world No.58.

Speaking with SEN Radio’s The First Serve on Sunday, Barty admitted she had been forced to re-work her goals after her comeback had unfolded even better than she had anticipated.

Stosur in prolonged injury battle

Gold Coast QLD, Australia, 25 July 2017 | samstosur.com

Sam Stosur, who hasn’t struck a ball since going down in the fourth round at Roland Garros to Jelena Ostapenko, has had to delay her comeback.

Stosur was leading the Latvian teenager by a set before the injury began to affect her play, contributing to a three-set defeat.

She since skipped the entire grasscourt season and then withdrew from the WTA event in Washington DC.

Less than seven months on, the 29-year-old is now poised to re-enter the world’s top 150.

Ebden’s extraordinary ascent continued this week when the West Australian jumped 95 places to world No.154 after reaching his first career ATP final in Newport.

Australian Open champion Mervyn Rose dies, age 87

The tennis family is mourning the passing of seven-time Grand Slam champion Mervyn Rose AM and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Rose made his Grand Slam debut in 1949 as a teenager and would go on to reach a career-high ranking of No.3.

The first of his two Grand Slam singles titles came at the age of 24 at the 1954 Australian Open in Sydney. He defeated defending champion and top seed Ken Rosewall on the way to the final. In the final the previous year he had lost to Rosewall in straight sets. In 1954 he beat his long-time doubles partner Rex Hartwig. The pair also defeated fellow Aussies Neale Fraser and Clive Wilderspin to take the doubles title.

Aussies in action: Millman hits the US hard courts

Continuing his comeback from groin surgery, John Millman will take his place in the draw as the only Aussie in action at the ATP event in Atlanta.

The hard court tournament, which is the first in the US Open Series leading up to the year’s final Grand Slam event at Flushing Meadows, is an ATP 250-level event.

Another Aussie, Nick Kyrgios, was the defending champion but had to withdraw due to an ongoing hip injury.

Ebden falls in Newport final

Top seed John Isner proved too strong for Matt Ebden in the ATP Newport final - but the Aussie qualifier certainly put up an admirable fight.

Australian Matthew Ebden has fallen short of his maiden ATP Tour singles title after losing the Hall of Fame Open final to American John Isner in Newport.

The 29-year-old Ebden, playing in his first ATP event final, went down 6-3 7-6(4) to the world No.21 and top seed in Sunday’s title match at the grasscourt tournament.

Qualifier Ebden, ranked 249 in the world, struggled to match the powerful service game of Isner, who sent down 17 aces to seven and won 90 per cent of points on his first serve.

Ebden continues stunning week, reaches Newport final

Australian qualifier Matt Ebden will line up against No.1 seed John Isner at Newport in what will be his first career ATP final.

‘Becker Wrecker’ Peter Doohan dies, age 56

Melbourne VIC, Australia, 22 July 2017 | tennis.com.au

The tennis family is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Peter Doohan and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Dubbed the ‘Becker Wrecker’ after famously defeating two-time defending champion Boris Becker at Wimbledon in 1987, Peter reached a career high ranking of No.43 in singles and was unbeaten in Davis Cup representation. He won the South Australian Open singles title and reached No. 15 in doubles, winning five titles during his distinguished career.

Following his retirement, Peter coached in the United States, after first studying at the University of Arkansas, where he was all-American and a NCAA champion. He returned to live in Australia in 2009.

ANZ serves up support for Queensland with tennis challenge

ANZ and Dylan Alcott OAM raise $10,000 for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation with Cairns Charity Tennis Challenge

Cairns had a taste of tennis action this week when three-time Paralympic gold medallist Dylan Alcott OAM challenged local Cairns identities in a series of exhibition games, to raise $10,000 for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

ANZ installed a ‘pop-up’ tennis court to the Pier Bar Carpark along the Cairns Esplanade on Wednesday.

Participants went head-to-head with Alcott for four points each, with $100 for every point Alcott won going to the Foundation. The day was hosted by ABC Far North Breakfast presenter Kier Shorey.

Ebden continues winning run in Newport

The 29-year-old advanced with a 6-1 7-6(2) victory over Slovakian sixth seed Lukas Lacko in the American grass court event.

The GOAT Debate Is a Fairytale Used to Promote Tennis

First of all, before some people get their knickers in a twist because I often talk about the GOAT, let me make it clear that I always said I don’t really believe in a GOAT but that I liked the debate and speculation.

Now I’m not even sure about that part anymore. Why? Because it has become clearer than ever to me that the GOAT argument is used as a phony marketing tool and that there are far too many variables to determine a GOAT, some of which I will look at in this post. Other variables have also become apparent to me at this Wimbledon like the biased scheduling and the influence of the media which is considerable.

De Minaur continues rapid rise

Alex De Minaur’s breakthrough season has continued, winning his first professional singles title in Poland last week.

The 18-year-old Sydney born talent won an ITF Futures event in Povoa de Varzim. He swept through the draw as a wildcard entry, dropping just one set.

De Minaur also teamed up with Spaniard Roberto Ortega-Olmedo to win the doubles title.
