Popyrin eyeing French Open glory

Melbourne & Olympic Parks, Olympic Blvd, Melbourne VIC • 3001, Australia, 10 June 2017 | Tennis Australia

Australian junior Alexei Popyrin is through to the Boys’ singles final at Roland Garros. The 17 year-old from Sydney needed exactly one hour to beat regular doubles partner Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4 6-2 in the semifinals.

In a tight first set the pair traded breaks before Popyrin was able to take the decisive advantage. Carrying the momentum into the second set, Popyrin was able to break Fokina on three occasions to serve out his place in Saturday’s title match.

Popyrin is aiming to become the first Aussie junior to lift the Roland Garros title since Phil Dent in 1968. Greg Jones, a runner-up in 2007, was our last junior finalist.

Dellacqua & Barty march towards history

Casey Dellacqua and Ash Barty are on the cusp of making history at Roland Garros as the pair secure a berth in the Final.

Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty are one win away from an historic French Open triumph after marching into the women’s doubles final in Paris.

Dellacqua and Barty extended their claycourt winning streak to nine matches with a 7-5 4-6 6-3 semi-final victory over Czech sixth seeds Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova to become the first all-Australian women’s pairing to make the title match at Roland Garros in 46 years.

Now the Fed Cup teammates have the chance on Sunday to atone for several grand slam near misses and become the first all-Aussie team to land the women’s title in the French capital in the near half-century era of professional tennis.

Wawrinka and Nadal Will Contest 2017 French Open Final

Wawrinka and Nadal will face each other in the 2017 French Open final after they defeated Murray 6-7(6), 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-1 and Thiem 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 respectively. The Wawrinka vs Murray match was the match of the tournament while the second semi-final was generally a disappointment.

Congrats to Stan for turning last year’s semi-final loss to Murray around but it was by no means easy. Stan served for the first set and was a break up in the third but he gradually gained the upper hand and the fourth set tiebreak was the key.

Murray had the opportunity to close it out there but once Stan won it it was one-way traffic. I was glad he didn’t get the bagel because that would have been unfitting after such a great match.
