Lammons/Withrow inflict Ram/Salisbury’s first US Open defeat for four years
Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow snapped one of the most impressive winning streaks in US Open history on Monday afternoon.
The home favourites defeated three-time defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 7-6(3), 6-3 to book their quarter-final spot at the hard-court major in New York. Third seeds Ram and Salisbury had won 20 straight matches at the US Open dating back to the start of their 2021 title run, but they could not deny Lammons and Withrow on Grandstand.
The 13th-seeded pair produced a dominant serving performance. It won 92 per cent (35/38) of points behind first deliveries in its 95-minute third-round win. Lammons and Withrow, who have already lifted ATP Tour trophies on American hard courts in Atlanta, Washington and Winston-Salem this year, are now 2-2 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Ram and Salisbury.
[ATP APP]The duo’s run to its third Grand Slam quarter-final has also boosted its Nitto ATP Finals qualification hopes. Lammons and Withrow are currently ninth in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, but could rise as high as fourth by clinching their maiden major crown in New York.
Awaiting the American pair in their third Grand Slam quarter-final will be Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic. The 11th seeds downed Wimbledon champions Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten 6-2, 6-2 in their third-round match.
Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic were also early winners on Monday at Flushing Meadows. The Roland Garros titlists defeated Ivan Dodig and Adam Pavlasek 7-5, 7-6(4) to set a last-eight meeting with Neal Skupski and Michael Venus or Tristan Boyer and Emilio Nava.
