Sam Stosur has not played competitively since an injury-affected fourth-round loss at the French Open.
Stosur, who fell in three sets to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko, was forced to skip the entire grasscourt season as she battled a stress fracture in her playing hand.
After seven weeks off, she resumed hitting – only to find it too painful. After more time off, she’s begun hitting – lightly – during a training stint in Melbourne this week.

Australian comeback star Thanasi Kokkinakis has won a third-set tiebreak against Peter Polansky to reach the quarterfinals of the Los Cabos Open in Mexico.
Kokkinakis won the second-round clash 4-6 6-3 7-6(4) and will face the winner of world No.23 Albert Ramos Vinolas’s clash with Taylor Fritz.
Kokkinakis, 21, who is two months into a full-time ATP tour comeback after almost two years of crippling injuries, claimed victory over his Canadian opponent in just over two hours.

Jordan Thompson pushed Alexander Zverev to the limit before the world No.8 escaped with a tense three-set victory in Washington DC.
Thompson rallied from 4-1 down in the third set before edging ahead 5-4 in the final tiebreak; Zverev ultimately ran out a 4-6 6-3 7-6(5) winner.
Earlier on Wednesday in the US capital, Aussie lucky loser Marc Polmans fell 6-2 6-3 to American Jared Donaldson.
