Rodionova into first WTA quarterfinal

A day after shocking defending champion Duan Ying-Ying in the first round, Arina Rodionova has marched on at the Jiangxi Open in China.

The 27-year-old beat hometown hope Liu Fangzhou 6-4 6-2 to advance to her first WTA quarterfinal.

There she will face Han Xinyun – her third Chinese opponent in a row – after Han beat fourth seed Wang Qiang in three sets.

Djokovic’s announcement was today and I was happy to hear that he decided to pack it in for the season. Obviously, as a fan, I will miss his tennis but this break is so long overdue that it needs to be this long.

Enough is enough. It is better to do a Federer now and come back in 2018 fresh and 100% healthy. No more unnecessary risks with his all-important health. Health always comes first especially for an athlete because without it, you are on the sidelines.

That is the hard lesson Djokovic had to learn because by not taking a break after he won the personal slam he has pretty much wasted a year on tour and now he has to take an added five months off. His ranking will fall but that is of least importance now.

Rodionova wins big in Nanchang

Arina Rodionova has continued her rich vein of form, upsetting Duan Ying-Ying in straight sets to advance to the second round in Nanchang.

Rodionova beat the fifth seed and defending champion 7-5 6-4 to set up a second-round meeting with Liu Fangzhou, also of China.

The pair had split four career meetings but Duan had won their last two, both in 2017; one of those matches came in the qualifying rounds at Apia International Sydney.

Millman beats Tiafoe, Harrison next

Australian John Millman has survived a tough challenge from American teenager Frances Tiafoe to win their first-round encounter at the Atlanta Open.

Tiafoe served for the match in the third set but Millman broke back before winning a tie-breaker to claim a 5-7 6-4 7-6(5) victory.

Millman will face fourth-seeded American Ryan Harrison in the round of 16.

Stosur in prolonged injury battle

Sam Stosur, who hasn’t struck a ball since going down in the fourth round at Roland Garros to Jelena Ostapenko, has had to delay her comeback.

Stosur was leading the Latvian teenager by a set before the injury began to affect her play, contributing to a three-set defeat.

She since skipped the entire grasscourt season and then withdrew from the WTA event in Washington DC.
