The tennis family is mourning the passing of seven-time Grand Slam champion Mervyn Rose AM and our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Rose made his Grand Slam debut in 1949 as a teenager and would go on to reach a career-high ranking of No.3.
The first of his two Grand Slam singles titles came at the age of 24 at the 1954 Australian Open in Sydney. He defeated defending champion and top seed Ken Rosewall on the way to the final. In the final the previous year he had lost to Rosewall in straight sets. In 1954 he beat his long-time doubles partner Rex Hartwig. The pair also defeated fellow Aussies Neale Fraser and Clive Wilderspin to take the doubles title.

Continuing his comeback from groin surgery, John Millman will take his place in the draw as the only Aussie in action at the ATP event in Atlanta.
The hard court tournament, which is the first in the US Open Series leading up to the year’s final Grand Slam event at Flushing Meadows, is an ATP 250-level event.
Another Aussie, Nick Kyrgios, was the defending champion but had to withdraw due to an ongoing hip injury.
John Isner takes the International Tennis Hall of Fame title for the third time in his career.
This is the American's first title in two years.
David Ferrer is using this Swedish Open Tennis win to push his motivation forward. First title since Vienna two years ago.
The Spaniard defeated Alexander Dolgopolov to nab the title at Bastad.
Top seed John Isner proved too strong for Matt Ebden in the ATP Newport final - but the Aussie qualifier certainly put up an admirable fight.
Newport, RI, USA, 24 July 2017 | AAP
Australian Matthew Ebden has fallen short of his maiden ATP Tour singles title after losing the Hall of Fame Open final to American John Isner in Newport.
The 29-year-old Ebden, playing in his first ATP event final, went down 6-3 7-6(4) to the world No.21 and top seed in Sunday’s title match at the grasscourt tournament.
Qualifier Ebden, ranked 249 in the world, struggled to match the powerful service game of Isner, who sent down 17 aces to seven and won 90 per cent of points on his first serve.

The tennis family is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Peter Doohan and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
Dubbed the ‘Becker Wrecker’ after famously defeating two-time defending champion Boris Becker at Wimbledon in 1987, Peter reached a career high ranking of No.43 in singles and was unbeaten in Davis Cup representation. He won the South Australian Open singles title and reached No. 15 in doubles, winning five titles during his distinguished career.
Following his retirement, Peter coached in the United States, after first studying at the University of Arkansas, where he was all-American and a NCAA champion. He returned to live in Australia in 2009.
