Tomljanovic retires hurt in Stanford
Stanford, CA 94305, USA, 2 August 2017 | tennis.com.au
Ajla Tomljanovic has been forced to withdraw from the WTA Bank of the West Classic in Stanford due to a shoulder problem.
The former world No.47, currently ranked outside the top 200, lost the first set to sixth seed CoCo Vandeweghe 6-2 before pulling the pin after a medical time out.
It’s the second straight week injury has intervened; last week at an ITF event in Sacramento, Tomljanovic reached the final before withdrawing.
The Croatian-born Aussie underwent shoulder surgery in 2016 and made a return to the tour in late February.
She has enjoyed some success in the 11 tournaments she’s played since, building a 14-11 record, reaching the third round in Miami and the semifinals or better at three ITF events, and slashing her ranking from No.664 to No.228.
